The Two Best Pieces of Advice So Far

March 12, 2017 by Elizabeth Wiseman

The process of picking a surgeon went a bit like this:

My sister Bev who is an oncology nurse, recommended a surgeon; someone husband Dr. Dan liked too: Greg Midis (pronounced Midas, so obviously, I can't help thinking associating him with the Midas Touch)  who was trained at MD Anderson. Decision made.

Ironically, I knew of him because in my December discussion with my OBGYN who originally told me to get a mammogram doctor, he told me that Dr. Midis was amenable to more open health care system. I thought at the time, “I like this guy I don’t know.”

Dr. Midis was very kind and gave me two good pieces of advice:

1)Don't focus on what caused it. Look to the present.
2) Don't listen to other stories--everyone's treatment is different.

The next morning, I showed up for a pet scan. My sister had given me some valium which I took ahead of time—just stressed that the cancer had spread.  Bev stayed with me while they shot me up with radioactive fluid and sugar solution that would go to the cancerous regions.  They scanned me and thank the Lord, the cancer had not spread to other parts of my body. I was so relieved.
